They Shine in Skyworld - MMIWGT2S Earrings
February 14 is more than a commercial celebration. It marks a time of commemoration for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, trans and 2-spirit people, all bright shining stars with equally bright, shining futures ahead of them taken too soon.
The Lil' Red Dress movement started in 2018 in BC, Canada. As explained on the official Webbsite:
'The Lil’ Red Dress Project started as a conversation around the kitchen table and quickly grew into a family project and community initiative. Our goal is to raise money for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls signage and to help bring awareness to broader community.'
While the Project offers a pattern that beadworkers can use to create their own campaign, we used materials already available in the studio to create a variation on the red dress fringe. All proceeds from these earrings will go to the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, a vital organization for the urban Indigenous community of the island. Currently, the Org is backing 7 different programs for the community and donations are part of what makes it possible. We strongly encourage you to get involved, either through the purchase of these earrings, or directly on NWSM's donation page.
